Characteristics of a Samoyed

Like other Arctic breeds, snowy days are a cause for celebration in a Samoyed’s mind, and your dog will likely be especially happy to play outside or bury themselves in snowdrifts. Some owners even provide kiddie pools filled with ice during the summer months as a special treat for this breed to play in.

History of the Samoyed

Samoyeds descended from Nordic European Spitz dogs. This breed derived its name from the Samoyedic peoples, who made them an integral part of their lives. They used Samoyeds for herding reindeer, pulling sleds, and keeping their camps warm during the night. Initially, the breed had various colors, but eventually, white became predominant. Arctic explorers used it as sled dogs.

The first Samoyeds arrived in Britain at the end of the 19th century and shortly after in America. They have become quite popular as family companions and show dogs. In 2005, Samoyeds were ranked 75th among registered breeds by the AKC, with 154 breeds registered.
